Movie_Themes_-_Star_Wars_-_by_John_Willams.I am an intermediate musician with no recording-studio experience. I have the excerpted piece of the MIDI if it's okay to post. If I open the track in the MIDI editor and just click on any note (not actually edit anything) playback is then correct from then on. I found out what makes the problem go away. I closed and reloaded the project and the track 9 stuck notes were back. In the "fixed" state the track 9 notes were working correctly but the track 4 notes were getting stuck instead. I was messing around with a lot of things at the time so I don't know what caused it. Terrific, everybody's least favorite kind of bug. I should also mention that during the course of my testing it got into a case where it sort of fixed itself. I looked closely at the MIDI and the notes do not actually overlap in time, although they do butt right up against each other and are not what I would call "cleanly played", but the output from Aria Maestosa more accurately represents what's there. I'm not familiar with a whole host of instruments but in my experience every note-on should have a corresponding note-off unless an all-notes-off is used.

I don't have a software synth that I can use, but I can tell you that even if I eliminate the SD-80 from the setup and instead use MIDI Monitor to act as a virtual MIDI port to receive and display the MIDI messages, the same output results. If I can excerpt just the offending measures and the problem still happens then it's probably a small enough piece to be "fair use".

I wasn't sure how that kind of thing is received around here so I thought I would err on the side of caution and not post it or tell people where to get it. My concern in posting it is that even though it is a freely available MIDI, it is a MIDI to what is probably a copywritten piece of music. Roland SD-80 Studio Canvas for MIDI output Here is the same passage played correctly by Aria Maestosa:ħ96241.245 To Port 1 Note OffđĜ♯4Đ <- total 8 on, 8 offħ96242.749 To Port 1 Note OffđĜ♯4Đ <- total 8 on, 8 off Here is the monitor output as played by Reaper, with my comments:ħ94669.433 To Port 1 Note OffęĜ♯4Đ <- total 8 on, 5 offħ94670.933 To Port 1 Note OffęĜ♯4Đ <- total 7 on, 6 off Using MIDI monitor, it is clear that there are not enough note-off commands for the C#4 notes in the first two groups. I've played the file through other software, both to the SD-80 (Aria Maestosa) and software GM emulation (Quicktime Player 7, which has its own set of issues but not this one). Scrubbing through the notes in the MIDI editor does not exhibit the problem! Slowing down the tempo does not correct the problem. Note that the problem only occurs in realtime playback. You can solo channel 9 and start playback just before measure 23.4 and observe the problem. there are more note-on commands than corresponding note-off commands. There is a group of notes at measures 23.4 and 24.3 that both have stuck notes - i.e. There are two tracks in particular that are getting stuck notes, MIDI channels 4 and 9, but the notes on 9 more reliably produce the problem.

There seems to be only one really good version of it floating around so if you have the one you know it.

The test setup is using a specific MIDI file which I doubt I can post but it can be found on various MIDI download sites - the Star Wars theme by John Williams. I'm playing back a MIDI file from Reaper directly to a Roland SD-80 Studio Canvas, using the class-compliant interface, not the vendor-specific driver, although it seems that the problem should show up regardless of the destination. Probably shear luck at all that I found it. However, in setting up and testing workflows, I discovered a problem in MIDI playback where notes are getting stuck.

New to Reaper here - I thought I would give it a try based on its superior price/performance ratio before dropping the money to upgrade to Logic Pro X.
